Aging Skin – Does diet play a role?

Aging gracefully is what we all strive for. Our skin shows the first signs of us growing old. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, causing fine lines and wrinkles on our faces. Anti-aging is impossible, it is a part of life that is inevitable. Environmental factors, diet, and nutrition can add years to glowing and healthy skin.

When it comes to diet, we typically relate it to our body – toned muscles, weight loss, and alike. But, we hardly take note of the fact that the foods that we eat, play a major role in the wellbeing of our skin. Foods like fruits and vegetables along with water and healthy fats are a boon for our skin. They matter a lot to our skin as much as they do to our bathroom scales.

It does not matter, whether you have any skin concerns or not, it is important to accept that diet plays a vital role in the health of our skin and thus, in our aging process. A healthy diet and water are all that our skin requires staying clearer, healthier, and younger for life.

Diet and Aging

As mentioned earlier, the first signs of aging are reflected on our skin. Skin reflects our general health. Studies confirm that it is always possible to delay the natural aging process and improve skin conditions through diet-based strategies.

What is aging?

Aging is a result of both genetics and environmental influences. Physical and psychological stresses, ultraviolet radiation, lifestyle habits, age, and nutritional intake, all play their role in the natural process called aging. And, the best way to delay this natural process of aging is, by preventing it from happening. And prevention can be done with the three golden rules – protection, balanced nutritional diet, and total body care, which include calorie restriction and exercise.

Eat your way to slow the signs of aging

It is not possible to rewind the clock, but it is always possible to slow it down. Some factors may not be avoided, but eating a healthy balanced diet that provides the body with all the essential elements is an important aspect that impacts our wellbeing as we age.

The human body is a wondrous thing. It can heal and restore itself. Fruits and vegetables, rich in photochemical and various other nutrients can keep us protected from illnesses and improve the skin conditions and our appearance. Fatty fishes and olive oil, rich in healthy fats like omega-3, helps skin cell membranes stay strong and flexible. The anti-oxidants in leafy greens and olive oil, offer us protection from UV rays, keeping the skin plump and smooth.  Foods rich in Vitamin C, along with low carbohydrate and fats allow fewer wrinkles and prevents age-related skin dryness and thinning of the skin.

Another aspect of slowing down the natural process of aging is to stay hydrated. Drinking water regularly is one of the healthiest habits that you can ever have and not only for your skin but for the entire body. By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, you are providing your skin and the body with the moisture that has been lost through sweat and other natural processes.

Eating the right foods is essential for our overall health and the health of our skin. We all will age, it’s in our genes, but we can delay this process and stay and look young for longer through a healthy and balanced diet, positive lifestyle approaches, and staying physically active.
